Meet the Most Civilized Vanderhall Variant: Carmel. OH! And It Has 202 Hp!

But you will have to await its arrival in 2019…

Vanderhall Carmel

If you’re looking for the last word in luxury, a three-wheeler probably isn’t for you. Originally conceived to exploit British laws that placed lower taxes on vehicles with three wheels than four, these oddities don’t offer much in the way of comfort or refinement. But Vanderhall Motor Works claims its new Carmel is as upscale as the California town it’s named after.

Here’s another “motorcycle” with bucket seats and a steering wheel, but who cares when it’s this awesome!

The Venice model marked the beginning of a whole series of three-wheeled cars, which recently entered the Venice Speedster, and the next turn is the Venice R and the Venice Speedster R.

The electric Edison2 is also turning into a ruler: the Edison4 is preparing for the exit.

The new Carmel will not be an exception – the most powerful, comfortable, luxurious and expensive of all tricycles. He even has doors opening against the move.

 More powerful

Unlike Vanderhall’s Venice three-wheeler, the 2019 Carmel features a set of doors as well as more interior room to go with the GM-sourced 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol producing 200 HP, a 10% increase over the Venice’s 180 HP 1.4-liter unit.

Since this 1.5-liter engine is also lighter, it gives this new three-wheeler a 75/25 weight distribution, which is a good thing.

As for performance, the 1.5-liter turbocharged unit also puts down 203 lb-ft (275 Nm) to go with the 200 HP (202 PS).

In a straight line, the Carmel can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds and max out at 138 mph (222 km/h).

Doors and windshield

The Carmel also offers more comfort, thanks to a windscreen and real doors. The Venice and Venice Speedster does not have that.

The new Carmel emphasizes ourongoing commitment to the autocycle segment,” said the company’s marketing director, Daniel Boyer. “In contrast to other manufacturers in our market, the one and only thing Vanderhall does is manufacture All-American autocycles. We are committed to being the leaders in this segment, and the Carmel is the latest evidence of that dedication.”

Features on the Carmel include the front entry doors, high-performance 4-piston brakes as standard, bespoke 19-inch wheels, LED lights, synthetic upholstery, electric power steering, provisions for accessory air conditioning and a removable roof. The vehicle even comes with heated seats and a two-channel audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.

The mono-aluminum chassis and ABS composite body have been carried over from the Venice model, and customers will be able to choose between four distinctive colors: Silver Vintage Metallic, Poseidon Blue Metallic, Ruby Metallic, and Pearl White.

But there’s something more to the story that you guys should know.

As with all three-wheelers, regulations vary by state. The current Vanderhall Venice is considered a motorcycle in some states, meaning the driver must have a motorcycle license and abide by applicable helmet laws. But other states classify three wheelers differently, meaning a regular driver’s license will do, and no helmet is required. So if you’re thinking about buying a Carmel, check your local laws.

The Vanderhall Carmel goes on sale in 2019, starting at $39,950.
