Check Out the First Trailer of Dark Phoenix: A New Evil Rising from The Ashes

The latest entry in the X-Men series...

Dark Phoenix X-Men Movies

Dark Phoenix’ long road to the big screen is almost over.

20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix

has had some mystery around it since being announced. But thanks to the official trailer that debuted during The Late Late Show with James Corden. It gave the fans a sneak peek at what could be the final film in the franchise (before the mutants join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.)

The new X-Men movie is an adaptation of the 1980 comic book storyline The Dark Phoenix Saga by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, and John Byrne.

In the storyline, Jean Grey assumes the power of the Phoenix Force, which gives her borderline godlike powers that Jean can barely control. However, when she is corrupted by the Hellfire Club, she becomes the Dark Phoenix and turns against the X-Men.

Obviously, the movie won’t use this exact storyline.

But it looks like it will be a slightly more faithful adaptation than X-Men: The Last Stand where the Dark Phoenix was a repressed personality.

This looks pretty exciting and hopefully puts the X-Men back on track after the pretty good Days of Future Past and purple makeup mess that was Apocalypse.

At the very least, it’s super refreshing to see Sophie Turner ‘s Jean Grey front and center with James McAvoy’ Professor X and Michael Fassbender’ Magneto off on two opposing sidelines.

(Although I do still love their bickering: “You’re always sorry, Charles…”)

Anyone who saw Turner feed a man to his own dogs on Game of Thrones knows she can play ruthless baddie with the best of them.

And those yellow costumes!

As a huge fan of the 1990s X-Men as well as the animated series, it’s an absolute thrill anytime the big-screen team shows up rocking the classic yellow-and-blues.

Sophie Turner ‘s Jean Grey is the focus here, but the usual cast is back as well: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence (who seemed so bored in the last film that I’m shocked she came back for another), Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Evan Peters.

One new addition to the cast is Jessica Chastain, playing a shapeshifter who manipulates Jean.

I keep thinking of the vet who tells you-you need to put your dog down,’” Chastain told EW. “There’s something very clinical about it.” Sounds pleasant!

While the long delay to the screen might be cause for concern, perhaps Dark Phoenix will turn out for the best. At the very least, it’ll be better than Apocalypse.

Official Synopsis:

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite – not only to save Jean’s soul but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

After multiple adaptations and retellings of the original story over a variety of formats, Fox’s latest attempt to get the Phoenix “right” is finally upon us.

Director Simon Kinberg has involved in the screenplay of X-Men: The Last Stand, but this time around he gets to direct the film himself, and he's been waiting for another crack at the iconic story.

[The film] was so clear in my head, emotionally and visually, that it would have killed me to hand this to somebody else to direct,” Kinberg says.

We bet that Jessica Chastain's character, a mysterious extra-terrestrial shapeshifter (Skrull?), has her fingers in the game.

She is fire and life incarnate, and she’s here in the first Dark Phoenix trailer to usher in both the beginning and end of all things. God help us all.

Dark Phoenix is scheduled to hit the theatres on 14th February 2019. And is most likely to be the last X-Men movies that are separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is expected the upcoming purchase of Fox's entertainment assets by Disney will integrate the X-Men characters in the MCU.
